GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE Part 2

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE Part 2

THE ORIGINAL MATERIALS USED IN WRITING THE BIBLE
Introduction: There are many materials used by the authors to write the Bible. Though The Bible does not mention some of the materials used unless only one place where it is written that God wrote it on tablet of stone. Exodus 31:18. Let us consider the material as follows
1.        STONE: Having written on stone faces used in Mesopotamia, in the land of Egypt also Philistine. (This was possible because in the ancient days, the Hebrew language was without preposition. Job 19: 23-24)
2.        CLAY: This clay made of soil in ancient days during summer between 500-35 BC; the clay material was also used by Jeremiah. Jer 17:13 Ezek 4:1-3. There is scientific Old woman in Egypt in 1877 discover some written on the clay pot because they said man has never develop to a level of writing then. But to surprise as they were digging ground, they discover these block and bring them out and lay it down one by one and this was written on it.  THE HITTITES HABIRI this means “The Library of the Hebrews” super heated Nebula, these believe that at the beginning there was nothing like man or marriage or anything, they said the world is just something that heat let and form the world but this disputed the scientist, between Genesis and Malachi. “God said” appear 2,600 times. Both Old Testament and New Testament that scripture was inspire Holy Books. And even Jesus mentioned it and lived such live.
The apostles also quoted and lived by it. Luke 3:4, Roman 3:2, Acts 1:16, 2 Tim 3:16, Acts 1:16-20, 3:18
3.        PAPYRUS: That is tree cover that use in writing they will use one to join another one to make it a large paper but not paper. So, it is commonly use for writing instead of paper.
4.        VELLUM/PARCHMENT/LEATHER: These are made from animal skin like goat, sheep, cow, Camel and Antelope. Even it was used at the early Church in the New Testament.
5.        CODEX: This means bringing an information in a smaller way, which was written in capital letter before but now in minuscule or cursive.
6.        Miscellaneous item: These include Iron, tablet, and word port set. This was found in Samaria.  The word ‘book’ has two important way of using in connection with the law:
1)     It indicates that the material referred to was in writing from at an early age.
2)     It shows the combination of divine authorship and human’s transmission that gives the law its supreme authority and makes the book for ancient book.
THINGS USED TO WRITE
1.     Stylus: that means : “pen” used to write on mud
2.     Chisel: This is used to write on the rock
3.     Pen: This pen is used to write on leather
4.     Pen Knife: It is being used to sharpen the chisel
5.     Ink horn: That is the cup that they put ink in for preserve
6.     The ink: The ink itself
THE RECORD OF COPY
1.     Autographs: This is a Greek word which means the original writing from written speaker. Autographs are no more to be found today because it has been perished. All what we have now is the copy of the originals. Today, we can find this at museum only.

REASON FOR THE SCARCITY OF THIS ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT
a.      Because of the material on which those things were written which are so fragile and weak.
b.     Because of the wandering of the children of Israel.
c.      Because of many persecution faced by the children of Israel, especially from Emperors.
d.     There was also a tradition among the writers then called TALMUDIC TRADITION which says that the old Autographs must be ceremonially buried.
e.      Danger of Bible idolatry, that people will turn to worship the Bible. (1Kings 18:1-4; Judges 8:26-33)
2.     Manuscripts: This also is from a Greek word Scripto - i.e. hand writing from the original Autograph
THE WORKS OF SCRIPTS OR COPIES
Those who re-write these books of the Bible are called script or copies
1.                Scripts or Copies: There two men who first serves as writer, they are Baruku and Ezra. They are record keeper who by all means keeps the record of happenings in public. These two men are artist. They have legal protection of king that backed them. They were known as reporter and they were mostly concerned about the affairs of state and soldiers, but they major their works on the word of God e.g.
a)       Major work to copy the law
b)       They preserve the writing.  There is a rapid development in 100 years after these people.
2.        Massorets 500 AD: These are the custodian of the copy of the scripture. They are the one that brought together the book of Hebrews. In the case of New Testament book, there was no massoret because the materials they used are from the original. They provide it by themselves. But in the case of Hebrew Old Testament manuscript, it was customized for the Jews, and when the original of the book was getting old it was not burnt neither throw away but it was kept in the box of iron and buried socially and ceremoniously.
The oldest copy of the Old Testament is found in Leningrad in Russian and it was written in year 916 AD. It includes the book of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the book of 12 Minor Prophets. There is another book called Pentateuch written in 856AD which can be found in London museum, also other book in other museum.
RESERVATION OF OLD TESTAMENT MANUSCRIPTS
TALMUDIC PERIOD
Since it is the custom of the Jews to bury the Bible in an iron box instead of destroying it, they believe that one day God can still make them discover it. At a time called Talmudic period (1st period), this is a time between 300 BC- 500 AD. In this time, there are many scripture to be reading in synagogue. The word “synagogue” was emerged after a king rose by then and he had the temple burnt down. So, this makes the people that scattered all over to build synagogue in every area they are. At 168 BC,
THE MACABEES 168 AD
Macabees (i.e. “hammer” his original name is ‘Judas’)[ Jewish forces] caused a lot of problem. A king of Syrian Empire who took a title called Epiphanies which means “God manifest” in 175 BC. This man was called ANTIOCHUS IV Persecuted Bible and make attempt to destroy the Jewish religion.
POINTS RAISED AGAINST THE JUU
1.     There should be no more sacrifice in the Temple
2.     Sabbath should not be kept
3.     The Holy book must not be taught in the Temple again
4.     There should be no more circumcision of a male child
5.     He desecrated the Temple by sacrifice swine in the Temple to Zeus the gods of Greek.
This was what brought the uproar and problem that makes Mattathias, a priest, and his five sons, the most famous of whom was Judas, whose nickname was Maccabeus a word meaning “The hammer” or Jewish forces. Thank God, this Priest and his five children defeated the Syrian Kingdom under Antiochus iv. So these event becomes what the Jews celebrate yearly and call it Feast of Light, it happened around chrismax for eight days. So, at that period of Antiochus iv, the Assyrian destroyed many Old Testament manuscripts.
The Dead Sea scroll
After that time Dead Sea scroll was discover around year 1947 by Archeologist and another one was discovered in Feb 1946 at Southern part of Jericho and the man that discovered it was a shepherd who threw a stone to a sheep and heard a sound and trace it, and after he took it, she saw that it was a scripture and the place they discovered that scroll, they know that it is old people library call (Essenes)
3.     Massoret Period 500AD – 1000 AD: There was a complete rules and regulation for the writing of the Holy Book. It was this particular period that the rules and regulation formed
4.     Place of writing: A part of this book was written in wilderness of Sinai also at Jerusalem, and when Jews were in captivity in Babylon, also some were gathered at prison yard, also one writing at Patmos Island between Mediterranean Sea
5.     The Author/ Writer of the Bible: We have different views about the author but the scholars said “36 out of these authors are kings, chiefs, farmers, doctors, shepherds, tax collector, soldiers, the prophet, fishermen, lawyers and scribes. Time covered was 1000 years before it was completed.
Bible by then were written in capital letter and had no chapter or verses but God used some people under the anointing of Holy Spirit to do that, these are the names of those that God use for chapters; Mr. Lanfrance, Mr Stephen Langton, (Arch Bisop of Canterbury) in 1226 A.D. Later, Robert Estienne, a French printer, Cardinal Hugo and, Robert were the one that divided it to various verses in 155I AD The Geneva Bible was published in Geneva in 1556 A.D

Moses, David, Joshua, Samuel, Amos, Esther, King Solomon, Jeremiah, Daniel, Matthew, Mark, Dr Luke , Peter, John, James, Paul Apostle Diploma in law e.t.c. at Tarisu- Jerusalem.
THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIBLE
There were about three languages used in written the Bible, e.g;
1.     Hebrew
2.     Greek
3.     Aramaic
The Old Testament was written in Hebrew language with the exception of Daniel 2: 4 & 7: 28; Ezra 5: 4-6, 7-8; 7: 12-26 which was written in Aramaic also called Chaldean. Jer. 10:11. From the beginning, the official language was Latin and their common language was Greek
                              BIBLE TRANSLATION
About 400 AD there was a lot of controversy over bible by then, and the Roman Emperor refused to give equal right to Christianity like other religions, rather, they persecute and kill them.
Jerome was the first to translate Bible to Latin language and its call “Latin language version”. There are three friends who worked very hard on this work of translation. They are:
1.     Wycliffe                                 1320-1384 A.D           64 years
2.     Williams Tyndale                   1491-1526 A.D           35 years
3.      Coverdale.                             1488-1569 A.D           81 years

1.             JOHN WYCLIFFE
He was born in 1320 A.D in England, by the time of John Wycliffe, a complete of English language because necessary because of the following reasons:
a.                The British were on the throne that time and the Bible was translated from Latin to English to
suit the readers of that time.
a.                Old Latin version (Latin vulgate) was not satisfied to an English man because of the language barrier and because it weakens some verses

The complete John Wycliffe was printed in 1932. This publication led to persecution and uproars (About 8 bishops and church dignitaries rose up to him in Jerusalem)
Note: One should not allow persecution to hinder the call of God

2.             WILLIAM TYNDALE
He was born in 1491 A.D and was described as linguistic generous because he mastered almost eight (8) languages: Hebrew, Greek, Italy, Dutch, Spanish, Latin, French, English.
He was a rich man who did not use his wealth to enrich himself but for Christ
Above all, Tyndale was addicted to Bible study and made a great contribution in translating the Bible into English and transmitting it, in his effort to translate the Bible, he tried to get the support of the Bishop of England but it was not possible. Later, a wealthy man who was a cloth merchant in London came to support him.
There is great tribulation for Christians at that time, anywhere they see Bible, they will burn it and kill anybody that holds it. Because of this, Tyndale ran to England to cover himself so as to continue his work, but yet, he was betrayed by a Catholic man who pretend to be a friend, his name was Henry Pite, Tyndale was arrested and imprison in (May) 1535, New Testament bible he smuggles through a cloth merchant, who kept it inside the bundles of cloth to England was taken away from him. The town he was arrested was call Belgium today, and he was imprisoned, but his enemy was not pleased with that, they make sure that they burnt all those bibles of Williams Tyndale in three places in England, e.g.  1. London 2. Oxford 3. Antwerp.
Tyndale was tried in the court and find guilt of heresy, he was removed as a priest and later he was sentence to be stone to death and got burnt later. But that time he was at stony square, he prayed that God should open the eyes and save the kings of England. Tyndale was then strangled and burnt in Belgium. It was the prayer of this man that brought King James who has been an enemy to the Bible on board, King James Version was 90% of the work of Tyndale. Other two friends who remain together with their workers ran to Geneva at Switzerland and they finish their own Bible there, they print first in 1560 AD.
MILES COVERDALE
He was born in 1488, and he was the first person who has the hournor of printing the translation of the whole Bible. Though, William Tyndale was killed for his faith, yet he won the battle because his translation helped greatly to have Bible in English language. Coverdale acknowledge that he use the work of different translation which much was from Tyndale work.
THE ENEMY AND THE OPPOSTION OF THE BIBLE
How the enemy and opposition of Bible start in 168 A.D. The problem started and the soldier went to the temple and search for Bible, any copy found will be burnt and killed anybody hold it, because there is a word that said that “Bible is a magic book” that is threatening people that is why they do the work of canonization.
Their prophet (Mattathias) with his 7 children rise and defend the law and protect themselves, and that time fell under inter-testament, that is space between Malachi and Mathew. So, some kings and some caliber men like Antiochus four were also against Bible. Anybody that they find Bible from him\her will die; by then it was few people that know how to write. These people also wrote when there is no printing machine.
Pope also rose against it, the amazing things there was as the people kept against it, so also Bible kept multiplying. The enmity was great to the extent that nobody can read it outside else it will died, both kings and pope stood against it, but thank God that though all Bibles writing by hand were burnt, but by God’s grace, there is still about 170 copies of hand written bible that God protected for Himself. Pope, the leader of religion in Rome said in his own time that no one should read Bible and make a decree to back it with a certain punishment for it.
The following kings are the kings who opposed the Bible:
1.     Diocletian
2.     Constantine
3.     Claudius
4.     Nero
5.     Vespasian
6.     Titus
7.     Domitian
8.     Pope (Linus)
9.      Trajan
10.  King James
ENIMEY OF BIBLE IN AFRICA
First language that bible was translated to in Africa was Mali; by that time it was missionary that were white that brought hand written Bible to Africa. But according to history they were persecuted for 25 years. They killed many of them because there was a decree from England commanded that they should kill them, but thank God that there still some of them in Africa.
So, after these white has died and people started to thirst for God’s word, it was translated in many languages in Africa.
END OF BIBLE OPPOSITION
At the end of Bible opposition, James became king. In1611 AD, King James commanded that that they should print Bible and every synagogue and temple should have copies. So by then, they can read it outside and the first edition of the Bible was printed in the palace of king James, the name of the version printed then is been called “Authorized King James Version”

HISTORY OF READ LETTER EDITION BY LOUSI/KLOSELI           1899
As this author was writing a topic to a Christian newspaper, his eyes just go straight to Luke 18:20 and he mark that place with red. He thought within himself, that it is possible to recognize all the word of Jesus, if he could mark it all with the red. After that, he went to the church leader to ask for permission to print such.
He was given the permission after his explanation on the purpose. Therefore, he printed his first edition and he printed 600,000 Bible but we should take note that red printed have nothing to do for anybody, just to look at Jesus word. The first printed Bible from the press was the Latin language.

BIBLE INSPIRATION
1.     Definition by WEBSTER: The inspiration is the supernatural influence of the spirit of God in the heaven and life by which prophet, apostles, and sacred writers were qualifying to set forth divine truth without any mixture of error
2.     Definition by Dr L. Ganssen: He said inspiration is inexplicable power which the divine Spirit exercise over the author of the scripture to guide them even in employment of the word they were to used and to preserve them from all error as well from every omission
3.     Inspiration: is the result or manifestation of divine power working on, in, or through the prophets, Apostle or the writers which enable them to deliver or to record in a trustworthy manner the truth received in revelation. God use the human element in written, though they received inspiration, but yet they used their professional knowledge to express their mind
4.     Biblical definition: The Bible claimed the inspiration, Bible confirms inspiration, but Bible does not explain how people been inspired or how they receive the inspiration. The Bible does not describe inspiration though it confirms it. 2 Tim 3:16, 2 Peter 1:19-21. Inspiration is not a biblical term but it came from wartime word to English prescribe external power of influence. Job 32:8
Another view: Inspiration is a technical term for Holy Spirit supernatural guardian of these which receive special revelation from God to those who write the Bible. The result of the truth that is used to write the Bible is that the Bible contains the truth which he wanted his people to know and to communicate to the world. The two terms which was used in any discussion of the inspiration of the Bible are:
A.    PLENARY AND VERBAL PLENARY: A term meaning;”full or complete” meaning that each bible chapter and paragraphs of the bible is equally derived from God. Verbal inspiration emphasis the truth that the wording of text as well as the idea conveyed is supernaturally inspired by God through Holy Spirit.
The Bible is not just a useful body of human ideas. It makes clear the mind of God. Although the Bible does not tell exactly how God inspires its writers, it was certain that it is not in a mechanical way. God the Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity who is working with the person.
How does one person influence another person? Why do some have a more powerful impact upon people than others? Many factors are involved, we do know for certain that the writers were involved or carried along by the Holy Spirit as they got the message. II peter 20-21
The Holy Spirit work in the life of Virgin Mary; is a good example of how the spirit work in the life of the Bible
SUFFICIENCY OF THE BIBLE
1.     Does this satisfy us for our salvation
2.     Is it a reliable one?
3.     Is it worthy of confidence? I said yes its sufficient and worthy
4.     Is it trustworthy

1.     Its sufficiency through the testimony of saint
2.     Through counseling of the Holy Ghost
3.     The lamp onto the strengthen heart in the darkness and light to the believers, to the unsaved it is doom
                Content;
It contain the most sublime revelation of God that the world did not know
Influence;
It has brought saving light to a nation and individual, power to lead men of God and to transform their character
Authority
It met the need of court of appeal in religion; even false cults find it necessary to quote its words in order to make an impression on the public.
Accuracy
There is difference between Bible and any other book that no man can phantom the difference, is that it consisting 66 books writing by about 40 difference authors over a period of 1600 years and covering variety of topics, it never the less carrying a unity of team and purpose that can only be explained by God Himself. Some of the writers wrote on science while others wrote on history.
ANTI;
Science history and research have approve and disapprove many writers why some lost their value due to succeeding event on writing the holy Bible, not only the oldest book written in earth,  yet maintain its value.
How many book can stand even to reaching but the Bible can be read 100 times without been fading or losing its interest for the readers.
                            RESULT OF INSPIRATION
Though some people believed that the Bible we carry all about is incomplete, but there are some fact in it e.g
1.     The unity of the holy Bible.
2.     The progress of redeeming word; From Genesis to revelation, God has never forsaken man and even after the rapture. God will still save some people i.e tribulation saint.
We need to ask ourselves some question, is the Bible enough for our salvation? Can we rely on it? Is it sufficient? But all is yes
3.     There is unity between the writers of the Bible that after everything there is a kingdom
                            BIBLE REVELATION
Revelation is a chain of record of God’s revelation to man God’s communication to people concerning himself, His moral standard and His plan for salvation. God has made himself knowing unto man in everywhere in the marvel of nature and conscience which is able to distinguish this knowledge is universal and contain by it. God has display is glory unto everybody (Ps 19:1-6) when we talk of revelation it means how God reveal himself to man by Bible.
God reveal himself so that man may know him and worship him through the book i.e Bible. Bible is not whether to worship him but it shows when to be worshiping him (God).      Bible is not just a revelation of God to man, but it is a record of revelation of God to man (John 5:39-40).
Bible is a record of how God reveal himself to man, and all the light for man to receive the life was giving by it, what can we know of God from nature? God’s universal revelations make it clear that God exist and that God the creator of the mountain, oceans, vegetations, animals and mankind is wise and powerful Rom 1:20, Ps 104:24, Ps29:3-9
Holy Bible is a religion book and not a scientific book and deal with spiritual matters, or enhance its chief concern is dealing with God and man and how to redeem man to God through Jesus Christ
1.     DEFINITION: Revelation in Latin word means to make know, to discover, hiding made known.

2.     DEFINITION: Revelation is the supernatural act or divine process in which God gives to the human messenger or writers, glimpses of Himself, His will and His truth.

3.     DEFINITION: Revelation is the act of God by which He directly communicates truth not known before to man, which could not have been known in any other manner except through the Bible.
God communicate about himself in truth to man for a special purpose as we speak about revelation in connection with Bible, it is necessary that we know clearly about what we have been talking.
v In revelation is the whole self disclosure of the mind of God to man, whatever from decision He may take. This activity of God began at creation.

v Revelation is primarily historical i.e, it has taken place within the realm of human experience in event which actually happens in time and spoke upon on this earth.
                                    THE METHOD OF REVELATION
There is no Biblical record of how, but God does not keep us in darkness about himself it is clear that man is not the source of revelation and he cannot claim it as his own.

THE TWO THINGS TO CONSIDER

1.   The source and The resources of revelation
There are some questions to know well e.g
A.    Is God able to reveal himself?
B.    Is man able to receive God revelation?
All is yes, they were, because he is God, so is able to reveal himself to man.
Also man is able because man posses’ likeness of God, Man is capable to receive from him.  God is spirit, also man is spirit, moral, intelligent and will like God.
God is supreme and personal being.
God rules heavens and man rule the earth though man fell, but God has never forsake the human race Ps 8:4 He created things and he does not live them, but he controls and do the work of supervision, because God supervise, none of them has ever miss operated, sun, moon, stars e.t.c.

The object of revelation
The object of revelation is God himself not nature nor man, nor any other things created by God even man can only know God personally as God reveal himself to man, it is not possible for man to know God in full until we see him.
Jesus could only been seen now, but both of them (i.e. Christ & God) shall we see all together in heaven. God is the creator of everything in his sufficiency.

THREE IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GOD

1.     God is a personal being
2.     God is the almighty being
3.     God is the savior of the world
The place of Revelation
If we’re to ask about the place of revelation, our savior answer suppose to be, “wherever man is, God can communicate with him and easily reveal himself to him may be in the church, at farm, at river or at working place. Anywhere man is, God can communicate with him at due time, because of man’s limitation wherever he met the man he communicate his will to mankind. God’s record of revelation is only in the world of God i.e Bible alone that tells about God and Christ because Bible is the word of God and writing with God’s inspiration for interpretation.
BIBLE TRANSMISSION
Bible transmission means the given and preservation of the Bible throughout the centuries. These include the follow
1.     Written
2.     Copying
3.     Translation of the Bible text
4.     And its preservation
When there was a decree that the Bible should be destroyed, it was then that the people kept the original manuscript for safety. This made us to have our copy today.
LANGUAGE OF THE BIBLE
God has many means of communication, but if He communicates, how do men understand and record what He wants to pass across? God spoke by them or through them. He derived means of doing these by the following:
1.     God spoke to the Prophets, Apostles and writers. Heb 1:1
2.     By the Angel. Gen 18:19
3.     By prophets though dreams. Daniel 7:1
4.     By vision. Isaiah 1:1, Ezekiel 1:8
5.     By miracle. Ex 3:2
6.     By experience e.g. Jonah
7.     By nature. Psalm 8:3
8.     Inner voice to individual conscience. Psalm 19:1, Rom 2:15
9.     Casting of lot
10.  Studying of prophetical books. Daniel 9:1-
11.  Urim and Thumim. Exodus 28:30
This normally put on the chest of High Priest. With the thought that God will speak out of the heart of the High Priest, It’s normally cast on the ground to speak Yes or No (Exodus 28:10-30, Proverbs 16:33) to the situation without explanation. All these means are good in themselves, but not prefect means to preserve message. If God speaks and the message was not recorded, the message is likely to be forgotten. The reason for the above is that because man has short memory.
SUMMARY

1.     Short memory of man
2.     Inspiration may not be returned
3.     The truth may not be adulterated
