HAND-OUT 07 PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE OF MISSIONARY

PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE OF MISSIONARY

        INTRODUCTION TO MISSIONARY WORK

Mission is to go out with a purpose, Mission is a way designed by our Lord Jesus to accomplish purpose.  Without vision there will be no mission and there will be no missionary.

WHO IS A MISSIONARY?
MISSIONARY: is “A person called out with a purpose”.
MISSIONARY means A sent one.

This word missionary comes out from the Latin word MITTO that is to send.
It is rendered in Greek as “APOSTELLO” that is To Send.  Apostle is a special messenger of Jesus Christ.  A person to whom Jesus delegated authority to, for a certain task.

The word Apostle is used for the disciples whom Jesus sent in twos during His ministry in Galilee to expand His own ministry of preaching, and healing.  It was on the occasion that they were first called Apostles Mk.3: 14, 6:30.

There are different Apostles like: Jesus – Chief Apostle who was sent by His father in Heaven.  His mission is to redeem mankind.  And succeeded in His missionary journey to this world and in order that the work of the mission should continue after Him, then He appointed the twelve named Apostles for world evangelization.

The supreme task of the church is the evangelization of the world when God loved, He love a world.  When He gave His son, He gave His son for a world; God’s vision is a world vision.  That is the vision He wants us to have.

THE PURPOSE OF CHOSEN THE TWELVE

1.     So he might teach them.
2.     So that he might train them.
3.     To endow them with power.
4.     To send them out to make disciples in all the nations of the world.
Matt.28: 18 –20.  The (relation) relationship of His ministry and that of the chosen Apostles was told in the book of Jon. 20:21.
There are other three Apostles /disciples who were not among the twelve disciples they are: Paul, Timothy and Barnabas.

DIFFERENT APOSTLES

1.     The chief Apostle  - Jesus Christ
2.     The twelve Apostles of the Lamb
3.     Post  - Ascension Apostles
4.     Those with Apostolic type ministry.

Some argue that after Jesus’ Apostolic i.e. twelve. There are no more Apostles. But
according to the book of Eph. 4:10–13.  The Bible confirms that Jesus is still in the
process of giving men this ministry until the church is perfected.

HOW WERE THEY APPOINTED?
1.  By the Holy Spirit   - Acts 13:4
2   By the church   - Acts 13: 3

Before anybody can go out as a missionary, he must first be called by God, and also recognized by the church.  The church must know about his mission.

Apostles are not glued to a spots; they go to everywhere they are led by the spirit.  Act 8:26; 29; 39 and 16:6 – 7.  The word “Missionary” could not be found in the Bible but the idea of sending and selecting is found the Bible Lk.6: 13, 2Cor.13.

TWO TYPES OF MISSIONARIES

1.     Home missionary
2.     Foreign missionary

If there is home missionary, it means there is work at home for them.  And there is foreign missionary; there will be work for them across the nation to do.  God calls missionaries as a result of need.

There must be a missionary board in each local church; there are two important missionary Boards, which a missionary sending church must have:

1       Local Missionary Board.
2        Interdenominational Missionary Board.

All these boards have their work in different ways.  Local Missionary Boards deals with the missionaries that are working in their environment.  Interdenominational missionary Board deals with the missionaries that go beyond their culture, and their nation to do the work of mission, so, it is the duty of these boards to plan for their out going, their families and everything they may need.

CALL AND ITS GUIDANCE    ACTS.  16: 6 – 10

1.     Call to the gospel ministry and guidance has something to do with where to do the work, is it at home or abroad?
2.     The call of God is once in one’s life.  When it is understood and one obeys.  God will not repeat the call.  But lack of understanding and obedience may prompt God to renew one’s call basically; God ‘s call is once.
3.     Guidance is required throughout one’s lifetime. Guidance like: where God wants you to start the work, and how it should be perfectly done.  So one needs the guidance of God to be able to know also the type of missionary work one is going to do, may be home or foreign land.  To serve under an existing ministry or to be independent, in what specific culture Paul was sent to the Gentiles while Peter was sent to the Jews Gal. 2: 7 – 8
4.

3.     He must be spiritually fit.

4.     He must be a man of Holy boldness.
5.     He must also be physically fit in order not to bring blaspheme against the name of Christ.
6.     He must be educationally fit.
7.     He must be emotionally and mentally fit, i. e to have zeal for evangelism
8.     He must have clear voice
9.     He must be able to relay and interacts with people, because he is sent to the people.
10. He must be able to submit to the leadership and be accountable.

           THREE CATEGORIES OF MISSIONARIES

1.     PROBATIONAL MISSIONARY; Those who are on practical.  They are like teachers who go for      teaching practice when they are in the school.
2.     JUNIOR MISSIONARY; Those who are very young in the work, those that are doing the work under another missionary who can explain to them more.
3.     SENIOR MISSIONARY; These are the missionary who have been on the field for long and they don’t have anybody in their front to learn from, but they learn from their own mistakes.  The senior missionaries are the most experienced ones.  The juniors learn from the experience of their seniors but the seniors have nobody to learn from; but learn from their failure s and mistakes.  The senior ones are missionaries of experience.

MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES AND GOAL

INTRODUCTION:
There are many methods where by we can approach mission work, but there is only one goal, and the main goal is salvation of souls.

THE ACTIVITIES AND GOAL
The goal determines the activities.

1.     Evangelism
2.     Follow –up   --teaching method
3.     Discipleship   - training method
4.     Church planting
5.     Forming the liturgy I .e system of service.

THREE CLASSES OF EVANGELISM

1.     PERSONAL EVANGELISM; If you choose personal evangelism your approach must be equal to their culture but if it is not so the gospel will be like foreign culture to them.

2. PUBLIC MEETI NGS; If you are opportune to appear in the public meeting with good approach, a whole village or town may be mobilized to listen to you. Or if you have somebody from the community to stand as an intermediary, they will come to the Lord Jesus.

3.     GROUP /MASS EVANGELISM;

INSTRUMENT FOR EVANGELISM

1.     Missionary life
2.     Spoken word  - that is the chief means of the missionary’s communication.
3.     Written word like letter or writing of tracts.
4.     Visual aids - poster, almanac e .t. c.
5.     Audio aids - tapes, e, t c.
6.     Audiovisual aids  - film, video.

THE PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED BY MISSIONARY

INTRODUCTION; Missionary work today is very different from that where it was fifty years ago.  And yet there are still pioneer fields where heroism is demanded and persecution rages.  Trails there are that have never yet been blazed, where suffering is still the lot of those who ventured.

“I WANT TO REMIND THE COMMITTEE”, SAID McKay of Uganda, “that within six months they will probably hear that one of us is dead. One of us at least – it may be I – will surely fall before that . But I want to say is this: when the news comes, do not be cast down, but send someone else immediately to fill the vacant place”

That prediction was literally fulfilled.  One by one, members of McKay’s party either died of fever or were murdered by the natives, until before long, he alone was left.

But why let hardship deter? Hear what David Brainerd had to say;
“Here I am , Lord , send me, send me  to the ends of the earth; send me to the rough, the savage pafans of the wilderness; send me from all that is called comfort in earth; or earthly comfort; send me to death itself, if it be but in thy service and to promote thy kingdom”.

Yet , and listen to Francis Xavier;  Yet more, oh, my Lord, more toil , more agony, more suffering for the”

Here are C . T. Studd’s words;  “I f Jesus Christ be God and died for me , then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him”

Even death itself can be victorious. David Living stone was the one who exclaimed;  :”Death is a glorious event to the one going to Jesus”

CULTURAL DISTANCE INCREASES FROM EO TO E3.

Evangelist and missionaries have the responsibility of communicating the Biblical message of salvation in Christ Jesus across cultural boundaries.

To do so they must achieve a substantial degree of cultural understanding and must initiate the process of conceptualization; such Christian servant; have to learn how to communicate Christ to the receivers in terms of their thought patterns and language expression.

Media responses, decision making techniques acting and reacting forms and media worldviews.
The evangelist and missionaries responsibilities are to pas the super cultural truth of the Bible to the culture bound man. (People)
Bible is super cultural truth, which passes Hebrew and Greek cultures and translated to us in English culture and received in our own culture.

MOTIVATION FOR MISSION

We need to motivate people for mission work. If we don’t motivate them there will be no missionary work. God raise shepherd among the sheep.

What should motivate us for the work?

1.     God’s command  - Matt. 28; 19 – 20
2.     Prayer    - Matt. 9; 36 – 38
3.     The counseling of Godly counselors Pro. 13; 10
4.     The models of Godly missionaries Heb. 13; 7
5.     The teaching of Christ and Paul’s life.
6.     The rewards for obedience 2Cor.5; 10
7.     The promise of God.   Matt. 4; 19
8.     The assurance that Christ will build His church and no evil force can prevail against it.  Matt. 16; 18.
9.     God’s promise that He would be with us, helping guarding, protecting and giving us His spirit.  Lk. 11; 13.
10. The battle is not ours, but it is of the Lord – 1Sam. 17; 47.
11. A struggle to be more likes Jesus, as the father has sent me so also I sent you.  –Jon. 20 – 21

THE PROBLEMS

1.  Mobilization   Rom. 10; 14 – 16.
2   Communication Acts.  1; 8, Acts 10, Matt. 10; 5 –6

MOBILIZATION

When we talk of mobilization, it comes in two ways;
1.     God’s mobilization
2.     Church ‘s assistance.
a.      On out going missionary.
b.     On the family behind – Ex. 19:17-25.
This is the responsibilities of the sending Church.
