CHRIST AND
ATONEMENT
Study:
Matt.1:18-25, Rom.3:23-26, 1John.1:9.
“And she shall bring forth a son, and
thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their
sins”. 1:21 (KJV) .
Introduction: we need to study and understand who Christ Jesus is, His mission
on earth and the reason for His death on the cross at Calvary, if something
great and the purpose for shedding His blood will amount to anything in our
lives.
Why did HE come and die on the cross
and used HIS blood as a sacrifice of atonement. Why? Because all have sinned
and come short of the glory of God and no man can behold or bring forth glory unto God except sin is removed.
(1John.1:8-10) So, it behooves Him to come and die an excruciating death to set
us free from eternal death, by removing sin through his forgiveness and set us
free from the bondage of sin completely, that we serve sin no more.
Jesus said, ‘verily, verily, I say
unto you, whosoever committed sin is a servant of sin’. John.8:34 (KJV).
UNDERSTANDING
WHO JESUS IS
Isiah.7:4, john.1:21, Mk.16:16,
John.4:25-26. It becomes important for us to know this savior of our soul.
Don’t be a Samaritan (John.4:22) for He did not just bear the name Jesus but
for the purpose of saving his people. (Heb.2:14-15, Gal.6:16). From the power
and dominion of sin.
No doubt about the authenticity of
who Jesus is, He is the Christ (Matt.1:16, John.4:25-26) we have clearly seen
that Jesus is the Chris called Messiah. God Himself came in human form to pay
the debt of the entire human race. (Isa.7:14, Rom.6:23).
THE PROBLEM
OF SIN
God made you to enjoy fellowship with
Him, but sin brought estrangement (Gen.3:1-10). How could there ever again be
fellowship? Only by removing the cause of separation. Man was powerless to do anything about it
(Rom.5:6) only God could deal with the problem, for this reason, He sent His
begotten son, His own very image to die on the cross, shed His blood for our
redemption. (1John.3:6-21)
ATONEMENT
Atonement became necessary because
all sins must be atoned for.
Ataonement is to act in a way that
compensate for a previous wrong or error (Rom.3:25). The work of atonement that
Jesus Christ did by His blood brings redemption unto every on that confess his
sins and forsake them, instantly he/she is washed in the blood, made clean and
set for all righteous living. (1John.1:9) and this attainable only by faith.
Faith in his blood: Rom.3:24-25,
Rom.5:1-2, Heb.11:5-6.
The sacrifice of atonement becomes
activated and effective over a life, once he has faith (believe) that the blood
of Jesus has washed away all his sins and the cross of Jesus Christ has crushed
the sin (Gal.6:13-15)
THE SOLUTION
God arranged the redemption of man
from the power and nature of sin that devil introduced and planted into man
right from the garden of Eden (Rom.5:12, Ps.111:9). This redemption He sent
through His son, Jesus Christ, that whosoever believeth in him will not perish
but have life eternal.
Though God so loved you and chose
you. He could not disregard your sin. (Heb.1:13a) sin always has to be paid
for. You were bankrupt, so God paid the sum Himself so you could be forgiven
your debt and not to borrow from him (sin) again.
HOW DID GOD
DO IT?
Blood must
be shed: Exd.12:3-7, Heb.9:12-14, 22, 1Pet.2:24.
When God planned to redeem Israel
from Egyptian slavery, a lamb had to be sacrificed by every household
(EXd.12:3). This pointed toward ‘the Lamb of God’ who was to later come
(John.1:29). God taught Israel that there could not be forgiveness without the
shedding of blood. (Heb.9:22).
Since the law of God insists that the
penalty of sin is death (Ezek.18:4, Rom.6:23). Jesus the only sinless man had
to suffer death to save you from yours
sin and through the blood of Jesus that were cleansed from your sin
(1John.1:7b, Rev.1:5).
JUSTIFIED BY
HIS BLOOD. Rom.5:1-9
Justification is the act by which God
declared a sinful man righteous, verse 9 says that you are ‘justified by His blood: that is God’s side of this
justification. Verse 1 says, you are justified by faith, that is your side of it that must be adequately attended to
as we study the perfect work of sacrifice of atonement that bring deliverance
from the power of sin unto everyone that believe.
‘for with
the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with mouth confession is made
unto salvation”. Rom.10:9 KJV.
TOTAL
DELIVERANCE THROUGH ATONEMENT
Rom.5:12, Rom.6:1-14, Gal.6:14-16,
Col.1:12-14, Heb.11:5-6, 2Cor.5:17.
In the matter of righteousness, you
were declared bankrupt (Rom.3:23) but Jesus came and discharged your debts on
the cross. All His righteousness was paid into your account. (Phil.1:9,
2Cor.5:21). He removed us from the territory where sin is sovereign and death
reigns. He translated us into the kingdom of His dear son, Jesus Christ where
grace reigns unto eternal life. (Col.1:13). He removed the sting of death (1
Cor.15:56) and gave us life, all these He did on the cross by His blood.
(Rom.5:9).
He brought a total deliverance from
the tyranny of sin through His death on the cross at Calvary; it was total,
that we serve sin no more (John.8:34, 1John.3:6-8).
He disarmed principalities and powers
and made a pu7blic show of them, disgraced them triumphing over them and set us
free from sin. So, they that know Him and have encountered the cross of Jesus
Christ do not commit sin again. Those that still commit sin hat no known Jesus
or seen Him at all. (1 John.3:6). If
anyone remains in sin and claims being united with Christ, the Bible says he is
a liar (1John.1:6) and such passes insult to the spirit of grace.
”for if we sin willfully after that
we have received the knowledge of truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for
sins.
But a certain fearful looking for of
judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that
despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses.
Of how much sore punishment, suppose
ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the son of God, and
hath counted the blood of covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing and hat done despite unto the spirit of grace?” Heb.10:26-29. KJV.
“The just
shall live by faith”- because HE lives.
