ATONEMENT
BASIC
MINISTERIAL TRAINING
Study:
Matt.1:18-25, Rom.3:23-26, 1John.1:9.
“And she shall bring
forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his
people from their sins”. 1:21 (KJV) .
Introduction:
we need to study and understand who
Christ Jesus is, His mission on earth and the reason for His death on the cross
at Calvary, if something great and the purpose for shedding His blood will
amount to anything in our lives.
Why did HE come and die
on the cross and used HIS blood as a sacrifice of atonement. Why? Because all
have sinned and come short of the glory of God and no man can behold or bring
forth glory unto God except sin is removed. (1John.1:8-10) So, it behooves Him
to come and die an excruciating death to set us free from eternal death, by
removing sin through his forgiveness and set us free from the bondage of sin
completely, that we serve sin no more.
Jesus said, ‘verily,
verily, I say unto you, whosoever committed sin is a servant of sin’. John.8:34
(KJV)
UNDERSTANDING
WHO JESUS IS
Isiah.7:4, john.1:21,
Mk.16:16, John.4:25-26. It becomes important for us to know this savior of our
soul. Don’t be like a Samaritan woman who stood with a savior and yet she did
not know whom the savior is (John.4:22) for He did not just bear the name Jesus
but for the purpose of saving his people (Heb. 2:14-15; Gal. 6:16) from the
power and dominion of sin.
No doubt about the
authenticity of who Jesus is, He is the Christ (Matt.1:16, John 4:25-26) we
have clearly seen that Jesus is the Chris called Messiah. God Himself came in
human form to pay the debt of the entire human race. (Isa. 7:14; Rom. 6:23)
God made you to enjoy
fellowship with Him, but sin brought estrangement (Gen.3:1-10).It has been the
plan of God from the beginning to always fellowship with His own, this was the
reason He do come to Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. Do you know that God
made you to enjoy fellowship with Him, but sin brought separation? (Gen. 3:
1-6).
THE FALL OF ADAM AND EVE
God was not happy that
Adam derailed, that is, fell from His favour and provision, but all is the work
of the devil who has been the enemy of man from the beginning of the earth.
Snake became a good and
available instrument in the hand of the devil because of his cunning way of
life.
When snake enter into
the garden, it will be so difficult to believe that the devil has already coiled
inside the serpent. The garden of Eden was peaceful until serpent enter there. Immediately
he enter into the garden, he went straight to the woman, because he knows that
the man will be too strong for him to conquer.
But it was so surprised
that the man was there like nobody was there, because in his presence, the
devil was playing with his life, Satan is negotiating with his wife on what he
knows that it against the instructions given at the beginning and he did not
talk, he did not use his authority over serpent.
The question is that
where are you when Satan was negotiating with your children, wife and ministry?
Satan used three weapons for Eve and till now devil has not stop using it,
because it works for him:
1. It was good for food
2. It was pleasant to the eyes
3. It was a tree that makes one wise
The same method used
for Eve was also used for Achan in Joshua 7: 21-25. He (Satan) used the same
thing for our savior Jesus after his baptism Luke 4: 1-14.
The devil will win many
cases in heaven, because he will said I just gave an advice, and you have power
to turn it down.
THE IMPLICATIONS OF MAN'S FALL
1. Sin took over man's life
2. Man inherited death through sin
3. There was a great gulf in between man and
God
4. Man became accursed in the presence of
God. Rom. 3:25; Rom. 6:23; Rom. 5:12
How could there ever again be fellowship? Only
by removing the cause of separation. Man
was powerless to do anything about it (Rom.5:6) only God could deal with
the problem, for this reason, He sent His begotten son, His own very image to
die on the cross, shed His blood for our redemption. (1John.3:6-21)
ATONEMENT
Atonement became
necessary because all sins must be atoned for.
Atonement is to
act in a way that compensate for a previous wrong or error (Rom.3:25).
This atonement
can be liken to a prince who met a sacrifice that led him into a big sickness.
Atonement must
be made for this Prince by caring sacrifice for him, because if not, this
Prince will die. Rom. 3:25; Rom. 5: 6.
If there is no immediate
action by following the given instructions, this Prince will die, if they were looking
for excuses like:
- Self wisdom and education, the Prince
will die
- If they were too ashamed to carry the
sacrifice, the boy will die.
- Upon all , if there is nobody to help
them carry the sacrifice, he will still die.
THE MAN
THAT CARRY THE SACRIFICE
1. To have a correct heart of appreciation
always to him
2. Becoming obedient to that man for ever
3. Total submission in other to follow his
instructions always.
THE END OF SACRIFICE ON THE PRINCE Heb. 10: 26-27; Rom. 6: 1-2
If this Prince deliberately
goes about to that formal place of contacting the problem, it is a clear
indicator that this Prince will die. (Eternal death in hell fire)
The work of
atonement that Jesus Christ did by His blood brings redemption unto every on
that confess his sins and forsake them, instantly he/she is washed in the
blood, made clean and set for all righteous living. (1John 1:9) and this
attainable only by faith.
FAITH IN HIS BLOOD: Rom.3:24-25, Rom.5:1-2, Heb.11:5-6.
The sacrifice of
atonement becomes activated and effective over a life, once he has faith
(believe) that the blood of Jesus has washed away all his sins and the cross of
Jesus Christ has crushed the sin (Gal.6:13-15)
HOW TO KNOW THAT THE SACRIFICE
HAS BEEN ACCEPTED
It is true that not all
sacrifice are been accepted but for the sacrifice that has been accepted, there
are ways to identify it. As it happens in the world, so in the spiritual, if
the sacrifice of Jesus has been accepted on a sinner, there are many ways by
which the spiritual people can identify that; Let us use Paul as a case study
and learn many things from his life in other to know when a sacrifice has been
accepted. Acts 9:1-9
- A light shone around him from heaven
- Then he fell from the horse
- He was told of his error
- All his friend left him
- When his eyes were opened he could not see
any man.
- They led him by the hand to Damascus
- He could not eat for
three days, his appetite was controlled.

If any man handled precious thing with levity or does not
bother about glorious things, the person will be called the enemy of good thing
(Ota Aje) after all the work of salvation that came to us through the cross, we
are not suppose to see anybody becomes enemy of the finger that feed him/her.
But it was unfortunate that some has made themselves to become the enemy of the
cross. Let us look at way to identify such people. Philip. 3:17-21.

JUSTIFIED BY
HIS BLOOD. Rom.5:1-9
Justification is the act by which God declared a sinful man
righteous, verse 9 says that you are ‘justified by His blood: that is God’s side of this justification. Verse 1 says,
you are justified by faith, that is
your side of it that must be adequately attended to as we study the perfect
work of sacrifice of atonement that bring deliverance from the power of sin
unto everyone that believe.
‘for with the heart man
believeth unto righteousness, and with mouth confession is made unto
salvation”. Rom.10:9 KJV.
